If you worked in the Netherlands and paid loonbelasting (wage tax), there’s a strong chance you overpaid. Whether you worked in agriculture, greenhouses, warehouses, food processing, construction, or any other sector — Refutax handles your entire claim with the Belastingdienst so you don’t have to.
The Netherlands uses a system called loonheffing (payroll tax) that is automatically deducted from your wages. The problem is that this tax is calculated based on a full-year salary, without accounting for the fact that many foreign workers only work part of the year. On top of that, the Netherlands has a complex system of toeslagen (benefits and allowances) that many workers never claim because they don’t know they exist. Common missed claims include zorgtoeslag (healthcare allowance), huurtoeslag (rent allowance), and Kinderbijslag (child benefits). Refutax ensures you claim everything you’re entitled to — not just the basic tax refund.
Dutch tax refund per year
The Dutch tax system offers multiple ways to get money back as a foreign worker. Here are the three main claims we handle for you.
Your Dutch wage tax (loonbelasting) is often overpaid if you worked in the Netherlands for less than a full year. We file your belastingaangifte (tax return) with the Belastingdienst and claim back the overpaid amount. Refunds typically range from €500 to €2,500+ depending on your income, duration of work, and applicable deductions.
Many foreign workers in the Netherlands are entitled to government allowances they never claim. These include zorgtoeslag (healthcare allowance — up to €150/month), huurtoeslag (rent allowance — up to €300/month), and kinderopvangtoeslag (childcare allowance). We check your eligibility for all toeslagen and file the applications for you.
If you worked in the Netherlands and have children — even if they live in your home country — you may be entitled to Kinderbijslag (Dutch child benefits). The amount depends on your child’s age and can be claimed retroactively. We handle the full application with the SVB (Social Insurance Bank) on your behalf.

Everything you need to know about getting your tax refund.
Yes. You do not need to be in the Netherlands or have a Dutch address to claim your tax refund. Refutax handles everything remotely — we file your belastingaangifte with the Belastingdienst on your behalf, and the refund is sent directly to your bank account anywhere in the world.
You can claim a Dutch tax refund for the past 5 years. So in 2025, you can still file for 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. This is one year more than Germany. We recommend claiming all eligible years at once to maximize your total refund.
Loonbelasting is the Dutch wage tax deducted automatically from your salary. It’s calculated as if you’ll earn the same amount for the entire year. If you only worked part of the year, your employer withheld too much tax based on a projected annual income that was higher than what you actually earned. The difference between what was withheld and what you actually owe is your refund.
Toeslagen are Dutch government allowances designed to help with living costs. The main ones are zorgtoeslag (healthcare allowance — up to €150/month to help pay for mandatory Dutch health insurance), huurtoeslag (rent allowance — up to €300/month if your rent is below a certain threshold), and kinderopvangtoeslag (childcare allowance). Many foreign workers are eligible but never apply because they don’t know these benefits exist. We check your eligibility for all toeslagen as part of our service.
Yes. While DigiD (the Dutch digital identity) makes the process faster, it is not required. We can file your tax return using alternative methods — either by submitting paper forms directly to the Belastingdienst or using other authorized filing methods. Many of our clients who have already left the Netherlands no longer have an active DigiD, and we successfully file their claims without it.
Absolutely. Working through a temp agency like AB Midden, Otto Workforce, Covebo, Olympia, or any other uitzendbureau does not affect your right to a tax refund. In fact, temp agency workers are among the most common clients who overpay taxes because their contracts often cover short periods. Your uitzendbureau should provide your jaaropgave (annual statement) and loonstroken (payslips) — if they don’t, we can help you request them.
Not necessarily. The Belastingdienst can transfer your refund to a Dutch bank account or, in many cases, to a foreign EU bank account (IBAN). If you no longer have a Dutch bank account, we can discuss the best options for receiving your refund. Some clients use services like Wise (formerly TransferWise) to maintain a Dutch IBAN without living in the Netherlands.
